Supporting Small Farmers Across Tamil Nadu

Sengodu Foundation is on a mission to restore the health of Tamil Nadu's farmland — by helping small farmers move away from chemical dependency and back to the living, regenerative soil their ancestors knew.

Today, the majority of farmers across Tamil Nadu rely heavily on chemical fertilizers, a practice that has significantly degraded the natural characteristics and long-term fertility of our soils. We believe in a different path — sustainable, chemical-free agriculture that restores soil vitality, produces healthier food, and secures stronger livelihoods for farming families.

Sengodu Foundation promotes organic farming actively through hands-on training, resource support, and community education. Agriculture college students from institutions such as Karunya University in Coimbatore complete their internships directly with us — working alongside real farmers, teaching modern organic methods, and receiving invaluable grassroots experience. This cross-generational exchange of knowledge is something we are enormously proud of.

Beyond the field, we conduct structured educational programs for school students across 15 schools in the region. By teaching children about organic farming, green ecosystems, and the vital connection between healthy soil and healthy food, we are building a generation that will steward this land with care and consciousness.

🎓 Karunya University Partnership

Agriculture college students from Karunya University, Coimbatore, complete their internships with Sengodu Foundation — learning organic methods directly from farmers while bringing new research-backed techniques to the community. This is a proud collaboration bridging academia and the soil.

Promoting Organic Farming

Chemical fertilizers have damaged India's farmland for decades. We're leading the reversal across Tamil Nadu — one farmer, one field at a time.

🌿

Restoring Soil Health

Decades of chemical fertilizer use has degraded the natural microbial richness and water-retention capacity of our farmland. Our organic training programs rebuild soil structure, restore fertility, and make land productive for future generations.

📉

Reducing Input Costs

Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are a crippling expense for small farmers. Through vermicomposting, biopesticides, and natural methods, farmers cut their input costs by up to 40% — directly improving their net income and financial resilience.

💰

Higher Market Value

Certified organic produce commands premium prices in local and urban markets. Farmers who complete our training and transition to organic practices routinely achieve 25–40% higher returns on their harvests, creating lasting livelihood security.

🎓

Student-Led Knowledge Transfer

Agriculture students from Karunya University in Coimbatore complete their internships with our farmers. This extraordinary partnership bridges academic research with ground-level practice — benefiting both students and the rural communities they serve.

🏫

Educating the Next Generation

We conduct outreach programs across 15 schools, teaching students about organic farming, green ecosystems, and the importance of sustainable food systems — nurturing environmental stewardship from childhood.

🍃

Long-Term Environmental Impact

Organic farming reduces chemical runoff into rivers and groundwater, supports biodiversity, lowers carbon emissions from synthetic fertilizer production, and contributes to broader climate resilience for Tamil Nadu's agricultural heartland.

🌾

Organic Farming Transition Support

Our flagship program guides farmers through the complete transition from chemical-dependent to certified organic cultivation. We provide hands-on vermicompost setup, biopesticide preparation training, soil testing, and six months of follow-up support — ensuring no farmer is left to navigate the change alone. Participating farmers have seen yields increase by up to 30% and input costs drop by 40% within a single season.

🎓

University Internship Program

Agriculture students from Karunya University, Coimbatore complete real-world internships embedded with our farmer communities — a partnership we are deeply proud of. They bring cutting-edge agri-science; farmers share decades of land wisdom. Both grow richer from the exchange.

🏫

School Agricultural Education

We teach 500+ school students across 15 schools about organic farming, soil health, and green ecosystems — building a generation that connects food with land, and land with responsibility.

💧

Drip Irrigation Roll-Out

Twenty drip irrigation systems installed across Tamil Nadu farms, reducing water use by 50–60% compared to traditional flood irrigation while improving crop quality and yield predictability.

🚜

Shared Farm Equipment Bank

Our community equipment bank makes modern farm machinery — rotavators, seed drills, sprayers — accessible to small farmers on affordable rental, eliminating the need for costly individual ownership.

🐄

Integrated Livestock Livelihoods

Supporting dairy cattle, goat rearing, poultry, and bee-keeping programs alongside crop farming — diversifying income streams and building year-round financial stability for rural households.

Ravi's Organic Success — Chinnasalem Village

A 2-acre farm. A struggling family. A single decision that changed everything.

Ravi, a small farmer from Chinnasalem village, had been watching his yields shrink and his fertilizer bills grow for years. The chemical treadmill was taking more than it gave — degrading his soil season by season while leaving his family with increasingly thin margins.

After attending Sengodu Foundation's organic farming training and receiving support to set up a vermicompost unit on his own land, Ravi made the transition to completely chemical-free cultivation. The results exceeded every expectation he had dared to hold.

Within one growing season, Ravi's yields increased by 30%. His input costs dropped by 40%. And with his produce now sold as certified organic vegetables at premium market prices, he earns ₹15,000 more per month than before the transition — a transformation that has given his family genuine financial security for the first time.

— Ravi's story is one of 300+ we are proud to be part of. Yours could be next.

"

Before Sengodu Foundation came to our village, I was spending ₹8,000 a month on chemical fertilizers and still getting poor yields. After the organic training and vermicompost support, my costs have dropped and my soil is alive again. I never thought I would become an organic farmer, but here I am.
